text 12 Jul Link Wheels Explained

Assuming you came here from my twitter, you are on the second of six stops on my short real life demonstration of a link wheel in action. The next few pages will each give you a little tip on the purpose and creation of your own link wheel.

Some pages will contain more content than others because of the requirements of the individual domain hosting the article. Each will be at least mostly unique in order to get higher “respect” from Google and others.

These 6 pages were chosen for their speed of setup and article creation foremost, but there are benefits and flaws for ANY web 2.0 property you choose for your “spokes”. Some will get indexed faster than others and some have “Google Attraction” that will guarantee faster indexing than others. Basically, you can either dig around and figure all this stuff out or buy an ebook or something containing a list created by someone who had the time and patience to do such a tedious task.

In my 6 spoke example linkwheel I’ll tell you the basics for creating and maintaining your wheel, and try to show what not to do as best as I can. Now you can read some stuff about tumblr or go on to the next stop on this linkwheel.

Tumblr

Tumblr is an awsome service and makes a great addition to any linkwheel for many reasons:

  • Fast - Its speed for article creation is probably right in line with twitter. I love “spokes” that just let you sign up and post. Easy as pie too.
  • Customization - There are a LOT of user submitted custom themes to choose from, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you may also create your own from scratch and submit it if you want. The theme I’m using here is just one of many pre made ones available.

There are some cons, however, but no real dealbreakers:

  • Few Post Options - Basically, its an advanced user thing. If you want to create your custom post in Expression or something first, its not an issue. You can only easily post one media type at a time, but if you upload an image first you can post it in the Text box. A little clumsy if you ask me.
  • Recognition - It’s not REALLY an issue at all, but I bet more people know what twitter is than tumblr. The reason its a non-issue is because few humans will be reading this anyway. In fact, the only reason I’m typing this at all is to add extra unique content to this part of my linkwheel.
